Do JBLM civilian employees qualify for FERS retirement?
Yes. Civilian employees at Joint Base Lewis-McChord are covered by FERS. If you transitioned from active duty military service to a civilian role at JBLM, your military time can count toward FERS creditable service after you make a military service deposit to OPM. The deposit is 3% of military base pay per year of active duty. Many JBLM civilians find this deposit significantly increases their eventual annuity.
How does Washington State income tax affect my FERS retirement?
Washington State has no state income tax. Your FERS annuity, TSP distributions, and Social Security benefits will not be subject to state income tax if you remain in Washington in retirement. This is a meaningful financial advantage compared to retiring federal employees in states like Oregon, California, or Virginia. The federal tax treatment of your annuity still applies, but no Washington state tax layer on top.
Can VA Puget Sound employees keep FEHB after retiring?
Yes. VA Puget Sound Healthcare System employees who were enrolled in FEHB for the 5 consecutive years before retirement carry their FEHB coverage into retirement with the same government premium share. Given Washington State health insurance costs in the Seattle metro, maintaining FEHB in retirement often saves $10,000 or more per year compared to marketplace plans.
I work for NOAA in Seattle. Are there special retirement provisions for NOAA Corps officers?
Uniformed NOAA Corps officers have a separate retirement system distinct from FERS. If you are a NOAA civilian employee (GS or WAGE grade), you are under FERS. If you transitioned from NOAA Corps to a civilian role, your uniformed service time may be creditable via a military-style deposit.
