The 2025 Military Pay Chart: Basic Pay, Officer Salaries, and Retirement Benefits
There is expected to be 4.5% boost in compensation for service members across various branches, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Space Force. My article from last week reviewed the pay tables for active duty enlisted servicemembers. This week I will cover the basic pay tables for US military officers and warrant officers.
Basic Pay Tables for US Military Officers
*Basic pay for personnel in pay grades O-6 and below is capped at the Level V of the Executive Schedule rate. The specific figures will be disclosed at a later time
**Basic pay for military personnel in grades O-7 through O-10 is capped at the Level II of the Executive Schedule rate. Specific figures will be provided at a later date
How Executive Schedule Caps Income for High Ranking Officers
The executive pay schedule places limits on the basic pay for high-ranking officers in the US military. For military members in pay grades O-6 and below, their basic pay is capped at the Level V Executive Schedule rate. Meanwhile, officers in grades O-7 through O-10 have their pay capped at the Level II Executive Schedule rate. These caps ensure that military compensation is aligned with the broader federal pay structure. The specific figures for these caps are released annually and reflect adjustments based on the Executive Schedule. When the 2025 civilian pay raise goes into effect, more will known about the cap for 2025 pay.

What are the Different Pay Grades?
Pay grades in the military are categorized by rank and are used to determine the base pay for service members. Enlisted personnel are classified from E-1 to E-9, while officers range from O-1 to O-10. Each pay grade corresponds to a specific level of responsibility and authority within the military hierarchy. For example, an O-1 is a commissioned officer at the entry level, while an O-10 represents the highest officer rank, such as a general or admiral. The pay chart for 2024 outlines the base pay for each of these grades, providing a clear understanding of how rank influences compensation.
How Does the Number of Years of Service Affect Pay?
Years of service play a significant role in determining a service member’s pay. As military personnel gain experience and serve longer, their pay increases accordingly. This is reflected in the pay scale, where each pay grade includes incremental increases based on the number of years served. These increases are designed to reward loyalty and experience, ensuring that long-serving members receive appropriate compensation for their dedication. The 2025 military pay chart includes these increments, allowing service members to see how their pay will evolve over time.

How Does Promotion Affect Pay for Officers?
Promotion is a key factor in determining an officer’s pay. As officers are promoted to higher ranks, their base pay increases accordingly. Promotions are based on a combination of factors, including performance, leadership ability, and time in service. The 2025 military pay chart includes provisions for pay increases associated with promotion, ensuring that officers are rewarded for their achievements and contributions to the military.
Warrant Officer Pay Tables for 2025
What is the Difference Between an Officer Member and a Warrant Officer?
While warrant officers are technical specialists, regular officers are trained for leadership and command roles across various military operations. Both play crucial roles in the overall effectiveness of the military.
2025 US Military Pay Tables for Commissioned Officers
A commissioned officer in the U.S. military is an individual who has been granted a commission by the President of the United States or a secretary of a military department. This commission authorizes them to hold a leadership and command position. If they have at least five years of enlisted service or as a warrant officer, then they have their own special pay grades. The ranks are E1O to E3O, and the 2025 basic pay rate for each can be seen below:
Retirement Benefits that Accompany Military Duty Pay
How Retirement Pay is Calculated for Active Duty Service Members
Retirement pay is a significant benefit for military personnel, providing financial security after a career of service. The blended retirement system is based on years of service and rank at the time of retirement and includes participation in the Thrift Savings Plan. Military employees of the Department of Defense who complete at least 20 years of service are eligible for retirement pay, which is calculated as a percentage of their base pay.
